Titus

Roman Emperor Titus

Full Name: Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus
Profession: Roman Emperor

Nationality:
Roman Empire
Roman

Biography: Titus ruled the Roman Empire for a brief but significant period from 79 to 81 AD. He was known for his military prowess and his popular reign as emperor.

Titus began his career in the military, serving under his father Vespasian. He played a crucial role in the First Jewish-Roman War, leading Roman forces in the siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD. This campaign resulted in the destruction of the Second Temple, a pivotal event in Jewish history.

In 79 AD, Titus succeeded his father as emperor. Despite initial concerns about his character, he proved to be an effective and well-liked ruler. During his reign, Titus completed the construction of the Colosseum, a massive amphitheater in Rome used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.

Titus faced several crises during his short rule. He responded generously to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and a major fire in Rome in 80 AD. These actions helped solidify his reputation as a strong and caring leader, where prior to his rule there had been significant concerns as to his character.

The emperor's personal life was not without controversy. His relationship with Berenice, a Jewish queen, caused political tension and eventually ended due to public pressure. Titus died in 81 AD after only two years as emperor—reportedly claiming he had made only one mistake in his life, though none know exactly what this mistake was—and was succeeded by his brother Domitian.
