Biography: Vladimir is Nabokov is considered one of the most esteemed writers of the 20th century. His novel "Lolita" (1955) is his most famous work and has been turned into plays, films and ballets, including the 1962 film by Stanley Kubrick.
Born into Russian aristocracy, Nabokov and his family fled the Russian October Revolution settling in England and Berlin before emigrating to the United States in 1940. Nabokov was trilingual and knew Russian, English and French. He published his first works in Russian but his success came in America when he began publishing in English. Nabokov was also a translator and even translated his own English works, including Lolita into Russian.
Nabokov was also a respected entomologist and was responsible for organizing the butterfly collection of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. The genus Nabokovia is named after him.
