Profession: Novelist and Poet

Nationality:

Nigerian

Biography: Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian author best known for his debut novel Things Fall Apart (1958), which is widely read and studied in schools across the globe. The book, set in pre-colonial Nigeria, narrates the life of Okonkwo, a respected warrior, his struggles with the changing society, and eventual downfall with the arrival of European colonizers.

Achebe's subsequent novels also reflected on the challenges of post-colonial Africa. No Longer at Ease (1960) and Arrow of God (1964), like their predecessor, examined the effects of Western influence on traditional African society. His work helped shape the discourse around post-colonial identity and displacement.

In addition to his novels, Achebe wrote essays and short stories, often challenging the portrayal of Africa and its people in Western literature. His work was not limited to fiction; he was instrumental in the founding of African literary magazines and was a strong voice in Nigerian broadcasting during the country's struggle for independence.

Achebe's impact on literature extends beyond Africa. His work has been translated into more than 50 languages, making him one of the most translated African authors of all time.
