Biography: Walter "Fritz" Mondale began his political career as a Senator from Minnesota in 1964, serving two terms, then as Vice President to Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981. He was the Democratic Party's 1984 Presidential nominee, and notably selected Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate, the first woman in that role for a major party in the US. He later served as US Ambassador to Japan.
Prior to his political career, Mondale served in the United States Army during the Korean War; returning home to earn a law degree in 1956.
