Historical Context

The march through Washington in 1913 was the suffrage movement's first national event. Spearheaded by Alice Paul the march was led by activist Inez Milholland on a white ahead of 5,000 suffragettes.

The timing of the march was strategic; it was held a day before the inauguration of President Woodrow Wilson, and did much bring the cause to wider public attention.
