1948 "Toast of the Town" variety show hosted by Ed Sullivan premieres on CBS-TV; performers include the comedy team of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, and Broadway composers Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II previewing the score to "South Pacific"

1980 Musical comedy film "The Blues Brothers", starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, and featuring appearances by Aretha Franklin; Cab Calloway; and Ray Charles opens in 594 theaters
