Biography: Aaron Burr was an American politician who served as the Vice President of the United States (1801-1805). He is best known for his feud with Alexander Hamilton that ended in a pistol duel which Burr won, killing Hamilton.
Burr initially practiced law in New York City after serving as an officer in the American Revolutionary War. He then entered into politics, serving as Attorney General of New York (1789-1791) and as a member of the New York State Assembly (1784-1785). In 1791, Burr left behind state politics when he was elected as Senator for New York in which role he served until 1797.
Burr then entered into the 1800 presidential election, in which he tied with Thomas Jefferson in the electoral college. This was settled by the House of Representatives, with Jefferson assuming the presidency and Burr serving as his vice president.
