George Clinton

Profession: US Vice President

Biography: The son of Irish immigrants, George Clinton rose to serve as America's fourth vice-president, first under Thomas Jefferson (1805-1809) and second under James Madison (1809-1812).

As a lawyer Clinton became District Attorney of New York then Governor of the state in 1777. He held this office for two significant periods, 1777-1795 and later 1801-1804. He held the record as America's longest-serving governor for 21 years until 2015 when Iowa governor Terry Branstad's record in office overtook his.

As a supporter for American independence, Clinton was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress until he was commissioned as a brigadier general tasked with defending New York during the Revolutionary War. During the war he supported his friend George Washington and rode with him to his inauguration.

After the war Clinton opposed a stronger federal government, fearing a loss of income from tariffs for New York.

In 1804 he replaced Aaron Burr as Thomas Jefferson's running mate. He died of a heart attack in office under James Madison.
