Norwood's career began after signing with Atlantic Records in 1993 and releasing her self-titled debut album in 1994, which sold six million copies worldwide. She went on to dabble in acting a while and then continued to release music to no uncertain success.

She was also a judge on the very first season of America's Got Talent, but was then involved in a car accident in 2006. Her brother is Ray J and Snoop Dogg is her cousin.
