Biography: Coolidge, widely known as 'Silent Cal' for his reserved nature, was elected Governor of Massachusetts in 1918. He gained national attention for his strong handling of the 1919 Boston Police strike.

He was nominated as Republican Vice President and elected to office with President Harding. He unexpectedly became President upon Harding's death in 1923.

Coolidge was elected in his own right in 1924. His term of office reflected his belief in small government - he twice vetoed a farm subsidies bill and reduced taxes. In 1924 he signed a citizen act granting Native Americans full citizenship.

Though historians are divided on his presidency, he left office with considerable popularity and is viewed as having restored confidence in the government after the scandals the preceding administrations.
