Biography: Léopold Sédar Senghor was a Senegalese poet and intellectual that was the first President of Senegal, from 1960 to 1980, after the nation gained independence from France.

Prior to his official political career, he was an African socialist and major theorist of the Négritude movement. For this work he is regarded as one of the most important African intellectuals of his era.

His poetry was also renowned and largely revolved around and emphasised the themes which also concerned him in intellectual and political life.
