Biography: Douglas Fairbanks starting acting on stage as a teenager, and worked his way to Broadway before establishing himself in silent films in 1915.

He worked in a variety of genres, but became famous for his work in swashbuckling adventures such as "The Mark of Zorro"; "The Three Musketeers"; and "Robin Hood". He retired from acting in 1934, shortly after the introduction of 'talkies'.

He co-founded United Artists with Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith in 1919. He was among the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in 1927.

He was married three times, most notably to "America's Sweetheart", Mary Pickford, from 1920 to 1936. He had one child, actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. with his first wife, in 1909.
