Biography: George Dewey is known for having achieved the unique rank of Admiral of the Navy. He is most famous for leading the U.S. Navy to victory against the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War in 1898.

Dewey was born in Vermont in 1837. After being expelled from Norwich University, he enrolled at the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1858. During the Civil War, he served as a lieutenant on the USS Mississippi, participating in key battles such as the capture of New Orleans.

Following the Civil War, Dewey continued his naval career, serving on various ships and as an instructor at the Naval Academy. In 1896, he was promoted to commodore and assigned to command the Asiatic Squadron.

When the Spanish-American War began in 1898, Dewey led his fleet to the Philippines, where he engaged the Spanish Pacific Squadron at the Battle of Manila Bay. His decisive victory, accomplished with minimal American casualties, made him a national hero.
