Biography: Martin was referred to as the 'Fifth Beatle' because of his extensive involvement in almost all of their albums except Let it Be (1970) which was produced by Phil Spector.

He guided and developed the group's sound, and they became the best-selling act in the history of music with over 800 million album and singles sales. Martin was instrumental in developing their sound from early skiffle and rock roots to more adventurous, proto-progressive music that included Indian and classical elements, dramatically redefining what pop and rock music was.

Upon his death Paul McCartney said that Martin was the person most deserving of the title Fifth Beatle.
