George P. Shultz

US Secretary of State George P. Shultz

Full Name: George Pratt Shultz
Profession: US Secretary of State

Nationality:
United States of America
American

Biography: Shultz was an American economist and businessman who served as the 60th Secretary of State (1982-1989) under Ronald Reagan. Prior to this he was a senior executive at the Bechtel Group (1974-1982), the largest construction company in the United States, and Secretary of the Treasury (1972-1974) under Richard Nixon.

During the Reagan administration, Shultz pushed the President to normalise relations with the Soviet Union under Mikhail Gorbachev; and for this is credited with aiding in the thaw between the two nuclear superpowers.

After leaving public office, Shultz returned to business but retained one foot in the world of politics—serving, for instance, as an informal advisor to President George W. Bush. He continued to serve on the board of Bechtel during this period.

Notably, Shultz's name was tainted by his active involvement in the scandal surrounding Elizabeth Holmes' biotech firm Theranos. Holmes had claimed to have made technological breakthroughs in blood testing, but these were found to be fraudulent and the company collapsed.
