Biography: Hadrian, also known as Publius Aelius Hadrianus, was Roman emperor from 117 to 138. He re-built the Pantheon and constructed the Temple of Venus and Roma, and is perhaps best known for building Hadrian's Wall, which marked the northern limit of Roman Britain. He is regarded as one of the Five Good Emperors.

Born into an Italic family in Hispania Baetica, Hadrian was a member of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. His early career saw various military and political roles, including a marriage to Trajan's grandniece, Vibia Sabina. His ascension as emperor was marked by the controversial execution of four senators and a departure from Trajan's expansionist policies.

Known for his imperial ideals and personal interests, Hadrian visited nearly every province of the Empire. His architectural projects included the construction of Hadrian's Wall in Britannia, the Pantheon in Rome, and the Temple of Venus and Roma.

He was an admirer of Greek culture, promoting Athens as a cultural hub. His relationship with the Greek youth Antinous, who died prematurely, led to the establishment of a widespread cult in Antinous's honor. Hadrian's reign also saw the suppression of the Bar Kokhba revolt, a significant event that altered the course of Jewish history.

In his later years, Hadrian suffered from chronic illness and faced marital and succession challenges. He adopted Antoninus Pius as his successor, under the condition that Antoninus adopt Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.

Hadrian died in 138 and was deified by Antoninus, despite opposition from the Senate. Historically, he is recognized as one of Rome's "Five Good Emperors" and a "benevolent dictator," though his rule was seen as remote and authoritarian by the Senate.
