Biography: Hamid Karzai was President of Afghanistan from 2001 to 2014. He is also khan of the Popalzai Durrani Pashtun tribe of the Kandahar Province; a role which he took over after his father's assassination in 1999.

Karzai has been active in Afghan politics since the early 1990s, and was a key player in the Afghan Northern Alliance's victory over the Taliban in 2001. When the United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001, Karzai led the Pashtun tribes of Kandahar against the Taliban.

He was first elected President in 2004 and was re-elected twice but was criticized for corruption and his inability to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan. He was replaced as President by Ashraf Ghani in 2014.
