Biography: After serving in the First World War Harold Macmillan entered parliament in 1924. He served in Winston Churchill's war cabinet and opposed appeasement of Nazi Germany.

After the war Macmillan went on to become Foreign Secretary (1955) and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1955-57).

In the wake of Anthony Eden's resignation he became Prime Minister in 1956 and served till 1963.

As Prime Minister Macmillan repaired relations with the United States after the Suez crisis and distanced Britain from apartheid with his famous "Winds of Change" speech. Macmillan's tenure also saw the decolonization of west Africa.

Domestically Macmillan won the 1959 election with the slogan "You've never had it so good". However in 1963 France barred the UK's entry into the EEC and Macmillan's standing fell. In 1963 he was one of the forces behind the Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty, but resigned from office in October of that year.
