Biography: Peel served twice as Prime Minister of Britain (1834-1835, 1841-1846) and as Home Secretary (1822-1827, 1828-30), Widely regarded as the father of modern British policing and as one of the founders the modern Conservative Party, he is immortalized by the affectionate slang expressions 'bobby' and 'peeler' due to his creating the modern concept of the police force whilst Home Secretary.

Peel's first government lasted only four months as a minority power before it collapsed. His second government lasted for five years, passing several milestone piece of legislation including the Mines and Collieries Act 1842, the Income Tax Act 1842, the Factories Act 1844 and the Railway Regulation Act 1844.

Peel served during the outbreak of the Potato Famine in 1845. His decision to join the Whigs and Radicals to repeal the Corn Laws led to his resignation as Prime Minister in 1846, but he remained an influential figure in parliament.
