Biography: Modernist architect best known for his design of the glass-and-steel pyramid for the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Commission by Francois Mitterand and controversial when built, this structure has now become one of the symbols of Paris and the Louvre.
Pei won "every award of any consequence in his art", including the Brunner Prize in 1961 and the Pritzker Prize in 1983. The Pritzker jury commended Pei for giving "this century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms."
