Biography: Ira Levin was an American novelist, playwright, and songwriter whose most notable works include the novels Rosemary's Baby (1967), The Stepford Wives (1972), and The Boys from Brazil (1976), as well as the record-breaking play Deathtrap (1978).

Born in Manhattan, Levin was raised in New York and attended Drake University and New York University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before starting his writing career with scripts for radio and television. His Broadway play No Time for Sergeants (1955) gained recognition and played a role in launching the career of Andy Griffith.

Levin's first novel, A Kiss Before Dying (1953), established him as a significant figure in the literary world, earning him the Edgar Award for Best First Novel. It was subsequently adapted for the screen twice. His later novels, including Rosemary's Baby, The Stepford Wives, and The Boys from Brazil, were also adapted into successful films.

Deathtrap became the longest-running comedy thriller on Broadway and was later turned into a film with notable actors Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine. This play, alongside his novels, secured Levin's reputation as a master of suspense. He was recognized with several Edgar Awards and the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award for This Perfect Day (1970).

Levin's personal life included two marriages and three sons from his first marriage. An atheist of Jewish background, he lived in Manhattan until his passing from a heart attack in November 2007. His work has had a lasting impact, garnering praise from other authors such as Stephen King.
