Biography: Jack Kirby worked with both of the industry’s main publishers - Marvel and DC, and was responsible for the creation of many of the format’s best-known characters, including Captain America, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men and The Hulk.

In 1940 along with Joe Simon, Kirby came up with Captain America, a patriotic super soldier for a country at war. The comic was written for Timely Comics, a comic book publisher that would later evolve into Marvel.

Kirby later worked with Stan Lee at Marvel to create such well loved characters as the Hulk, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. Recent film adaptations of these characters confirm their status as icons of popular culture.

As well as an extraordinary imagination as a creator, Kirby also possessed a pioneering talent in illustration. His dynamic pencil and ink work expressed movement and action with an explosive energy that became the standard illustration style for the entire format.
