Biography: Jane Campion is a New Zealand screenwriter, producer, and director. She is the second of five women ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and is the first New Zealand director to be nominated for the award. Campion is also the only female director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Campion was born in Wellington, New Zealand, the daughter of Edith, an English-born opera singer, and Richard Campion, a New Zealand-born film and television producer. She initially worked as a screenwriter for television commercials and documentaries.

Campion's first feature film, Peel, was based on the true story of a man who had been wrongly imprisoned for the murder of a young woman. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and earned Campion an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
