Biography: A writer and Puritan preacher, most famous as the author of the Christian allegory "The Pilgrim's Progress", written during Bunyan's 12 years of imprisonment.
Bunyan was arrested under the Conventicle Act of 1593 for attending a religious gathering other than at the parish church and with more than five people outside his family. Sentenced to three months in prison, this was extended to 12 years after he refused to give up preaching.
Upon release, Bunyan went on to publish 58 other titles, many expanded sermons.
