Profession: Frontiersman
Biography: A frontier legend who was a fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and American Army officer. Exaggerated versions of his exploits were often the subject of dime novels.
Between 1842 and 1845 Carson accompanied the explorer John C. Frémont on three expeditions to the American West along the Oregon Trail.
When the American Civil war broke out Carson joined the Union army and led the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Infantry, fighting at the Battle of Valverde in 1862.
Carson went on to campaign against Native Americans the Apache and the Navajo rounding them up onto reservations under the instructions of army general James Henry Carleton.
Carson City, Nevada is named for him.
