Biography: Maarten Tromp was a Dutch admiral whose tactical prowess played a major role in the rise of the Dutch Republic as a significant naval power.

He lead Dutch forces in the Eighty Years' War, during which they attained independence, as well as against England in the First Anglo-Dutch War.

Troomp spent his childhood at sea with his father, a ship's captain. During this time, he was captured and enslaved by pirates (Barbary Corsairs). When he returned home, he set out on a successful naval career that ended only in his death in the Battle of Scheveningen.

His son, Cornelis Tromp, would also go on to be a successful Dutch admiral.
