Biography:The phrase "greatest thing since sliced bread" only became possible as a result of the work of Rohwedder, who in 1928 invented the bread-slicing machine.
The machine revolutionized the baking industry and meant sliced bread became commercially available throughout the world.
Standardized slices also boosted the sales of another recent invention, the automatic pop-up toaster, invented in 1926 by Charles Strite.
