Biography: Primary singer and songwriter for the British rock-pop band The Kinks (1964-96), Ray Davies played rhythm guitar, while his younger brother Dave played lead. He crafted such songs as "You Really Got Me"; "Waterloo Sunset"; "Lola"; "Celluloid Heroes"; "Come Dancing" and "Better Things". His lyrics often unfold in story form, and are filled with varying degrees of nostalgia, distress, and social satire.

In addition to his work with the Kinks, he has done some acting, and written for stage productions. He also worked to create contemporary choral arrangements of his songs, and was the subject a well-received West End musical. He published two books, including an "unauthorized autobiography".

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Kinks) in 1990. In 2014, he entered the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was granted a British Knighthood in 2017 for his service to the arts.

He has been married 3 times, and 4 daughters - including one with American rock singer Chrissie Hynde.
