Biography: Robert Altman was one of most influential film directors of the late 20th century.

This is in spite of not making his first successful film, "MASH" (1970) until he was 45. "MASH", starring Alan Alda was nominated for 5 Academy awards including Best Director and won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Altman had an extensive background in industrial films and television before moving into film. Altman's films were noted for the often large ensemble cast and multiple overlayered soundtracks.

After "MASH" Altman went on to make a number of critically acclaimed films such as "Nashville" (1975) and "McCabe & Mrs Miller" (1971) with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie before his career and reputation suffered a decline.

Altman made a comeback in the 1990s with films such as "The Player"(1993) with Tim Robbins and "Gosford Park" (2001).

Altman won his first Oscar in 2006, a Lifetime Achievement Award.
