Biography: The English actor initially came to notice for his portrayal of the scientist Stephen Hawking in the 2004 television film "Hawking". He went on to greater acclaim when he took on the role of Sherlock Holmes in the British series "Sherlock" (2010-17) created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and playing opposite Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. Cumberbatch won an Emmy for the role.
Since then Cumberbatch has gone on to roles in such prestigious projects as "Twelve Years a Slave" (2013), The Imitation Game" (2014) for which he was nominated for an Oscar, and Jane Campion's film "The Power of the Dog" (2021) for which he was again nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards.
Cumberbatch has also taken roles in high profile blockbusters including as Khan in "Star Trek: Into Darkness" (2013) and portraying Dr. Strange on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
