Profession: Russian President

Nationality:
Russia
Russian

Biography: Yeltsin served as the first President of Russia from 1991-1998. During the Soviet era Yeltsin served as the head of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, before coming to national prominence by opposing the communist coup attempt in August 1991, during the collapse of the Soviet Union.

He oversaw the privatization of Russia's formerly communist economy in his term. His use of 'shock therapy' economics led to an economic collapse, a drastic reduction in living standards, rampant crime, corruption and gigantic wealth inequality that followed the rise of the Russian oligarchs who controlled vast sectors of the economy.

Yeltsin resigned in 1999 in favor of his chosen successor, Vladimir Putin.
