George Wallace

Governor of Alabama and Segregationist George Wallace

Profession: Governor of Alabama and Segregationist

Nationality:
United States of America
American

Biography: Wallace was a southern populist and segregationist who famously declared in his 1963 inaugural address as Alabama Governor that he stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever".

Wallace then went on to stand in front of the entrance of the University of Alabama to try to stop the enrollment of black students, Vivian Malone and James Hood.

The incident brought national attention and encouraged Wallace to stand as a U.S. Presidential candidate for four consecutive elections. He sought the Democratic Party nomination in 1964, 1972 and 1976. In 1968 he was the American Independent Party candidate and remains the last third-party candidate to receive a state's electoral college votes.

A 1972 assassination attempt by Arthur Bremer left Wallace paralyzed, and forced him to use a wheelchair for the remainder of his life.

During his final years, Wallace publicly renounced segregationism and asked for forgiveness from African Americans.
